Shopping for greensSeasonal produce is now entering its prime – fresh green peas, Spring greens, and cherry tomatoes will be features of several vendors this week.  Frecon Farms will have their first cherries of the year, as well.

Flowers are also “hot” with Shady Grove Greenhouses  bringing Blue Hydrangea, Double Knockout Roses, Russian Sage, and a wide variety of hanging baskets, flower bouquets, planters, and perennials. 

Sunset Park cookiesTo soothe the sweet tooth, visit Sunset Park Gluten Free Cookies, who are now using brown rice syrup in their cookies, instead of sugar.  Designs by Francine will feature chocolate ganache-dipped fresh fruit, and the pie & cupcake ladies will certainly have some great options.

It’s a First Friday and that means our special craft vendors will also be with us, including Ceramics by Alex Beam-Ward, Bumblebee Bumz diaper covers, and hand-knit crafts by Clerico Creations.

Pea Salad


8 ounces sugar snap peas, trimmed 

2 TBS sliced almonds  

2 TBS extra-virgin olive oil  

2 TBS fruit vinegar, such as raspberry or pomegranate

1/4 tsp salt

1/8 tsp freshly ground pepper

4 Cups  greens

1 1/4 Cup snipped chives

1/4 Cup chopped fresh tarrago


  1. Add snap peas to pot of boiling water and cook until bright green but still crisp, 1 to 2 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water.
  2. Toast almonds in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.
  3. Whisk oil, vinegar, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add lettuce, chives, tarragon and the snap peas and toss. Serve sprinkled with the almonds.

A special farm dinner limited to only 30 people, 2 amateur chefs will prepare local food from the Kennett Square Farmers Market and other local sources.  Featuring recipes from the newly released Farmers Market Guide by Jennifer Loustau, the menu will include four vegetarian courses, wine, and herbal beverages.
       Tickets are on sale at the Kennett Farmers Market Fridays from 2 to 6 p.m. for $30 apiece at the Guinea Hen Garden booth (Wick’s Eggs).  Tickets will not be sold at the door; all tickets must be purchased in advance by June 8, 2012.
